WCL is public sector undertaking company. WCL is one of the eight Subsidiary Companies of Coal India Limited. The company is under administrative control of Ministry of Coal. WCL is headed by a CMD & Mr. Manoj Kumar is the present Chairman-cum-Managing Director.
The Company in corporated in 1979 under the Companies Act, 1956 has its registered office at Coal Estate, Civil Lines, Nagpur. WCL has been conferred "Miniratna" status on 15th March'2007.
It has mining operation spread over the states of Maharashtra (in Nagpur, Chandrapur & Yeotmal Districts) and Madhya Pradesh (in Betul and Chhindawara Districts).
The mines of Western Coalfields Limited are located in the State of Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh. For effective administrative control and operations, the mines have been grouped in Ten (10) Areas, Nagpur Area, Kanhan Area, Majri Area, Pench, Area, Pathakhera Area, Wani North Area, Chandrapur Area, Wani Area, Ballarpur Area, & Umrer area.
There are total 74 operating mines out of which 29 underground mines, 43 opencast mines & 02 mixed mines in these areas.
The Company is a major source of supplies of coal to the industries located in Western India in the States of Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Gujrat and also in Southern India in the States of Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Kerala.
Technology infusion in Underground Mines: For sustaining the current production levels and to achieve the targeted growth in the coming years, introduction of Continuous Miner (CM) at Chhattarpur– I Mine and scheme for introduction of CM has been approved for Tawa UG Mine.
Introduction of Man Riding: In order to eliminate long arduous travel, fatigue and to improve the efficiency of workmen in UG mines, 15 Man Riding Systems have been installed in 14 UG mines. Installation of 3 Man Riding System is underway at Tawa-II UG, Murpar UG and Silewara UG.
Important Information:
1. Western Coalfields Limited (WCL) has produced 60.20 million tonnes of coal as on 19 March 2023, which is 13.4% higher than the previous year. It is worth mentioning that this is the highest coal production done in any one financial year since the inception of WCL.
2. Wani Area contributed the maximum 15.02 million tonnes of coal in the company's 60.20 million tonnes of coal production. Similarly, 12.27 million tonnes of Umred area, 7.51 million tonnes of Ballarpur area and 7.98 million tonnes of Nagpur area have been a significant contribution of coal production.
3. With achievement of 64.28 MT Coal Production in 2022-23, WCL has accomplished its Mission 2.0. The production target was set to 62 MT for this financial year.
4. To set higher target and lead WCL on a newer path of progress, The CMD launched Mission 3.0. The mission 3.0 is to achieve target of 70 MT Coal Production in the coming years.
5. In Over Burden Removal, WCL has registered a remarkable growth of 19.7% as compared to last year. The OBR during FY 2022-23 is 327.13 million cubic meters.
New Initiatives:The Company has taken a major step towards Diversification and creating business verticals for boosting the top line through “Sand from Over burden Project”. The new commercial plant with capacity of 2000 cubic meter per day has been commissioned at Gondegaon Mines, Nagpur Area. Two more ‘Sand from OB Plants’ are under pipeline for construction at Chandrapur and Ballarpur Area.
MUDRA (Monetization of Unutilized Dump and Residual Assets): In pursuits for utilizing the land which have remained unused (as well as not likely to be used in future) along with stabilized external OB dumps & residual assets gainfully, an initiative christened as MUDRA was launched on 15th March 2021.MUDRA is a hybrid model for achieving Sustainable development goals ( SDG) besides generating sustainable revenue for the Company.
Mission SEHAT: An unique endeavour “SEHAT” was launched on 26th January 2021, for further improvement in quality of life of the Coal Warriors and their families.
