- Company Status: Schedule “A” Miniratna Category-I Company.
- Original Incorporation: Incorporated as Manganese Ore (India) Limited in 1962.
- Name Change: Renamed to MOIL Limited during the financial year 2010-11.
- Chairman-cum-Managing Director: Shri Ajit Kumar Saxena. (He started his career as a Management Trainee (Technical), SAIL in 1986. He worked in various assignments in SAIL starting with Bhilai Steel Plant and worked in various positions during his long tenure in SAIL. Earlier, he has worked as Director (Operations) of RINL-Vishakhapatnam Steel Plant, Chief General Manager, Mills, IISCO, Burnpur, Steel Authority of India Ltd.)
Historical Background
- Initial Setup (1896): Established as Central Province Prospecting Syndicate.
- Renaming to CPMO: Later renamed as Central Provinces Manganese Ore Company Limited (CPMO), a British company incorporated in the UK.
- Formation of MOIL (1962):
- Agreement between Government of India and CPMO.
- Assets taken over by the Government, forming MOIL.
- Initial capital distribution: 51% held by the Government of India and the State Governments of Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh, and 49% by CPMO.

- Dongri Buzurg Mine:
- Located in Bhandara district, Maharashtra.
- Opencast mine producing manganese dioxide ore.
- Uses: Dry battery industry, micro-nutrient for cattle feed, and fertilizers.
- Contribution: Supplies about 46% of India's total requirement of dioxide ore.
Production
- Annual Production Achieved: MOIL Limited has recorded its second highest production since inception, registering 6% growth over the previous year record with the production of 13.02 lakh tonnes of Manganese (Mn) Ore in Financial Year 2022-23.
- it has achieved its all-time high annual production of 17.56 lakh tonnes in 2023-24, registering a growth of 35% over the previous year.
- Grades of Manganese Ore:
- High Grade Ores: Used for production of Ferro manganese.
- Medium Grade Ore: Used for production of Silico manganese.
- Blast Furnace Grade Ore: Required for production of hot metal.
- Dioxide Ore: Used for dry battery cells and chemical industries.
Manufacturing and Technology
- Electrolytic Manganese Dioxide (EMD) Plant:
- Capacity: 1,500 MT per annum.
- Usage: Manufacture of dry battery cells.
- Quality: The EMD produced is of high quality and well accepted in the market.
- Ferro Manganese Plant:
- Capacity: 12,000 MT per annum.
- Purpose: For value addition of manganese ore.
Renewable Energy Initiatives
- Wind Energy Farms:
- Nagda Hills: 4.8 MW capacity.
- Ratedi Hills, Dewas District, Madhya Pradesh: 15.2 MW capacity.
- Objective: Promote non-conventional energy resources.
Recent Developments and Achievements of MOIL
Ministry of Mines Notification
- Exploration Notification (2014-15): Notified by the Ministry of Mines, Government of India, for conducting exploration of various minerals across the country, opening new business opportunities.
Joint Ventures
- Joint Ventures with SAIL and RINL: MOIL had 50:50 joint ventures with Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) and Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited (RINL) for setting up Ferro Alloys Plants.
- Winding Off Joint Ventures (2021-22): MOIL wound off SAIL & MOIL Ferro Alloys Pvt. Ltd. and RINMOIL Ferro Alloys Pvt. Ltd., striking off their names from the Registrar of Companies (ROC).
Major Projects and Investments
- Holmes Shaft Deepening (2018): Deepened from 300 meters to 435 meters with a loading station, costing Rs. 26.50 crores.
- Chikla Mine Vertical Shaft (2019): Sunk a new vertical shaft to 160 meters depth including headgear, structure, winding system, and allied works, costing Rs. 38.81 crores.
- Kandri Mine Shaft Deepening (2018): Deepened from 185 meters to 245 meters with allied works, costing Rs. 17.67 crores.
- Balaghat Mine Ventilation Shaft (2019-20): Sunk two ventilation shafts, costing Rs. 8.50 crore and Rs. 4.50 crore respectively.
- Munsar Mine Vertical Shaft (April 2020): Sunk a new vertical shaft to 160 meters depth, costing Rs. 51.32 crores.
- Ukwa Mine Vertical Shaft (August 2020): Sunk a new vertical shaft to 324 meters depth, costing Rs. 77.15 crores, with shaft sinking and lining up to 200 meters.
- Gumgaon Mine Vertical Shaft (January 2021): Sunk a large diameter high-speed vertical shaft to 330 meters depth, costing Rs. 194 crores.
- Munsar Mine Vertical Shaft Project (February 2021): Sunk a new vertical shaft to 160 meters depth with winder, headgear, and surface/underground infrastructure, costing Rs. 51.32 crores.
- Balaghat Mine Vertical Shaft (July 2021): Sunk a large diameter high-speed vertical shaft to 750 meters depth, costing Rs. 259 crores.
- Exploratory Core Drilling: Conducted 7205 meters exploratory core drilling using departmental drill rig, and 35,728 meters during 2021-22.
Memorandum of Understanding and Exploration
- MoU with GMDC (2022): Signed a MoU with Gujarat Mineral Development Corporation Limited (GMDC) to explore manganese ore in Pani area, Gujarat, and a tripartite MoU with GMDC and Mineral Exploration Corporation Limited (MECL) for exploration.
