
SHORT NOTES ON MINES ACT 1952
DEFINITIONS
-
Adult: Person aged 18 years or more.

Agent: Represents owner; manages, controls, or supervises the mine.

Day: 24 hours from midnight to midnight.

District Magistrate: Appointed under the Act for district duties.

Employed Person: Anyone working in/around a mine, including operations, maintenance, office/welfare, or related tasks.

Inspector: Appointed Mine Inspector (can include DM if empowered).

Mine: Any excavation (surface/underground) for minerals, includes boreholes, plants, shafts, workshops, etc.

Minerals: Substances/mineral oils obtained by mining, drilling, etc.

Open Cast Working: Surface excavation without shafts/tunnels.

Reportable Injury: Absence from work 72+ hours.

Serious Injury: Permanent loss (limb, eyesight, fracture, etc.).

Must be wholesome, marked "DRINKING WATER", located conveniently.

Not within 6m of toilets/washing areas (unless permitted).

Alternate arrangements allowed for underground workers with CI's approval.
Section 20: Conservancy

Separate toilets for males/females.

Must be clean, ventilated, well-lit.

Central Govt. decides number/type based on need.
Section 21: Medical Appliances

First-aid boxes: Sufficient, equipped, accessible, managed by trained person.

Transport for injured to hospitals is mandatory.

Mines with 150+ workers must have a first-aid room with medical staff.
